Elaborate Jewels then mine

I purchased this book at an estate sale about Clara Boothe Luce's sale of her jewels at Sotheby's. At first I just bought it because it had jewelry in the pictures then after I read what it was all about I was intrigued who she was and that someone was selling her lifes' worth of valuable jewelry.

This necklace is just beautiful then a picture of her wearing it. I think somewhere back in 1988 the estimate was $175,000.00

Her 14k gold evening bags.

This picture is blurry but I like seeing the name SOTHEBY"S. I'll never get to attend an auction there but it's fun for me to see movies about people being there.

Ok now for a few pictures of my rhinestone jewels which will never be list in a hard back book and sold at Sotheby's . First the boxes.
Then a few out of the boxes. I laid these out on the kitchen table this morning  while I was getting ready for work.   I tried to put them in color group.

this is so blurry
These pins were given to me in a box filled with beautiful jewelry and 3 of these pins are Nolan Miller. The swan, the flower and the bow. Thanks sister Becky.
I have been collecting vintage ladies watches so I can make me this bracelet, like in the picture.
You all won't believe this, I didn't at the time. I purchased most of these at a sale where 3 daughters were selling ALL of their mother's belonging for $.25 each. Yes anything at the sale was a quarter. Clothing furniture, craft room items, vintage clothing. It was wild, people were trying to grab things out of your arms. Need to say , nobody got my statch of jewelry. I got a jewelry box full of rhinestone earrings.
I tried to tell one daughter honey have an auction you will make a lot more money. Her mother was an entertainer, a singer and she had flashy clothes, loved them!!!!!!! I have a purple  velvet long coat I managed to hang onto. Anyway I had never been to a sale like that . It went on 4 days. I made it 2 of them. I am still amazed what I got for a quarter. The girls were just wanting to clean out their Mother's house and move on. The last day they had a huge moving truck there and was loading it up to take to Kansas City and donate somewhere.   Amazing.    Also the mother was young 63, died from having cancer.

  1. Greeting from Texas! Thank you so much linking up with me at faithgracecrafts for Pearls and Lace Thursday! Your post is well...just awesome! The collection is gorgeous and you have a prize of items there. That sale your talked about was something else! I couldn't believe any one on earth would sell their mother's things for a quarter a piece!! Oh my....
And your previous post really hit home with me too. I lost my mother 3 months ago on the 30th, so it has been a horrible few days for me. I can really feel her with me, and it's hard to even talk because I sound just like her. Do you ever catch yourself thinking, oh my that sounds just like her, when you speak?? It catches me off guard and then there I go. Mine too was lost to cancer. I guess I'll never get over it, but I do hope that healing will take the enormous loss away at least over time....
Blessings to you, and thank you so much for sharing with us.

  6. love all your loot! I always joke with my family that my body won't even be cold yet and they'll be selling my "stuff" for a quarter! Although it's kinda sad about the daughters no wanting their mom's things, I think it's wonderful that someone like YOU came along who can appreciate and re-use them in a fabulous way! :) mercedes

  15. Hey, I cut out that same picture of the watch bracelet and have been buying old watches ever since. I probably have enough to make at least two or three bracelets now. And I will. One of these days ....

  16. Hi Janice!
I love all your treasures, I have a pretty good collection of those vintage jewelry boxes too.
Like you, I keep them full of my gorgeous vintage BLING. You've inspired me to include them in one of my posts.
I also have a collection of those vintage watches. I have a magazine were they made these beautiful hor d'ouvre picks, I know it sounds weird but I'm sure that if you saw them you would agree that they are pretty classic!
Though after seeing the pic of the bracelet I might reconsider.LOL

Thank you for sharing your awesome collection!

  17. I have a box of old jewelry that belonged to hubby's grandmother and with us pushing 60 you can imagine how old her jewelry is. Not that any of it is valuable, but it means a lot to us.

Thanks for stopping by Pittypat Paperie and leaving the nice comment about my printing on fabric. Drop by again anytime Ü
