I use to have several back when I lived in the south Paducah Kentucky that is and when I still had my country and primitive kitchen where I live now. I have sold them all except this little spongeware pie bird. You set them in the middle of your pie and as the pie bakes the steam comes out the pie birds mouth.
I even used them once in a blackberry pie.I had a friend visit not long ago talking about a blueberry pie and I found a recipe in one of my Mom's old cookbooks. I just might have to use this little guy again. I think as far back as 1940's they were a special item to have in your kitchen
Do you have a pie bird? most common ones were the little black birds, my Great Aunt had one when I first discovered such a thing. That's what great about being young and discovering all the old kitchen items our families use to use and now they are just pretty collectables.

I have never owned a pie bird. I have baked a zillion pies though!
ReplyDeleteI have never had a pie bird either! Nor have I even SEEN any other than on Blogs! Guess I just didn't know where to look! Are they all that common?
ReplyDeleteHi Janice,
ReplyDeleteCute pie bird! I did have a black one but have since gotten rid of it. I don't bake enough pies! lol
See you soon!

I'm sure you already know I collect birdies but pie birds are something I DO NOT have. I wonder why people don't seem to use them anymore??
ReplyDeleteDarling! As much as I like to make pies I don't have one!
ReplyDeleteHappy New Week!

I don't (can't) bake pies, but I do love the little pie bird. And your canisters are absolutely wonderful. Mickie
ReplyDeleteOh I just love your pie bird. Yes, I have a collection of 7. They are easy to find online like on ebay, but I like to wait and look for them at antique stores...makes it a bit more challenging.
ReplyDeleteLove your little pie bird. It matches my kitchen! I would love one as a décor item.
ReplyDeleteI love it, I think you saved the best one for yourself. I have seen them, but never used one.
